Babymorocco gets sleazy with 'The Sound'.
The hyper pop heartthrob takes us back to the days of early 2010s hedonism on his sexy debut EP.

While activity in the outside world more or less came to a grinding halt during the COVID-19 lockdowns, it was never a more productive time for the underground pop music scene with artists far and wide taking advantage of all the free time they suddenly had on their hands to create uninhibitedly. One such artist was British singer-songwriter and rapper Babymorocco, who, after dropping his first songs in late 2020, put out a series of standalone singles — including “I Wish (California)” (2022) and “LET’S GO ZANTE” with South African rapper and DJ River Moon (2022) — before teaming up with mysterious producer and DJ Bamster for his debut EP, The Sound, which released this past June.
Taking us back to the days of early 2010s hedonism, The Sound is an homage to sleazy club hits from the Golden Age of VEVO, such as “OMG” by American singer-songwriter and dancer Usher (2010) and “Like A G6” by American hip-hop and electronic music group Far East Movement and American singer-songwriter and rapper DEV (2010), with a modern bubblegum bass (“NRG”) and glitchcore (“Total Bass of Your Heart”) twist that adds a layer of futurism to the project.
On the beachy opening track, “Sun Sex Party”, Babymorocco declares The Sound “thee summer record”, and he’s right, as the EP boasts seven bright and bouncy bangers perfect for a red-hot summer filled with unhinged, sweaty debauchery that not even American comedy crime film Spring Breakers (2013) could hold a candle too — and that’s saying a lot!
Tracks like the Bamster flip of his 2022 hit “Girlfriends” and “Electroheat” see the hyper pop heartthrob indulging in the two things he loves most in this world: Beautiful women and an absolutely filthy electro beat, respectively. Partying is Babymorocco’s love language, and the more hot girls and thumping electronic music a party has, the better. There’s nothing that screams “BABYMOROCCO - THE SOUND” more than drunkenly taking off all of your clothes whilst jamming out to a killer electro track, and that’s exactly what Babymorrco does on “Everyone”.
Sporting sick electroclash production and a glitchy vocal performance, “Everyone” is a sleaze anthem on which Big Rocco proudly puts himself on display for all to see. Although some may consider attention-seeking obnoxious, Babymorocco would argue that we should normalize being hot and wanting everyone to look at you, and I agree. The music video follows Rocco and his entourage of divas, including American social media personality and Trans icon Blizzy McGuire, on a sexy rampage through the city streets and even features a reference to the legendary monologue from English singer-songwriter and actress Lily Allen’s music video for her song “LDN” (2006) — it’s pure camp!
On the surface, Babymorocco seems like a vein, unstoppable party animal, but behind this facade lies a much more sensitive soul, as is revealed on the closing track, “Destruction” — a trancey bop that depicts leaving behind a toxic love affair that left both parties broken. It’s much darker than the preceding tracks and more in line with the hopeless romantic character previously established by his pre-The Sound singles, most notably “Fading (From My Eyes)” (2022) and “i wish you would make it easy” (2023). “Destruction” closes out The Sound on a somber note, showcasing a level of vulnerability that’s largely absent from the rest of the tracklist and proving that he’s not just a pretty face — Babymorocco has heart, and himbos* need love too.
*In March 2025, Babymorocco rejected the term “himbo” being used to describe him in reviews, stating that he is “actually smart”, and while I still believe that himbos need love, I’d like to clarify that Babymorocco is NOT to be viewed as one.
But that’s not all The Sound has to offer, as those who purchase a physical CD copy of the EP from Babymorocco’s Bandcamp (like I did) are treated to an exclusive bonus song, which happens to be none other than the title track! In contrast to the dreary atmosphere of “Destruction”, “The Sound” is a much lighter number celebrating the power of music and the euphoria that one experiences upon discovering a brand-new sound, offering the listener a much cheerier finale.
The undisputed summer record of 2023 within the underground pop music scene, The Sound is a brilliant slice of sleazy nostalgia with a touch of camp and a whole lot of sex appeal. From his quiet debut in 2020 to becoming a breakout star in 2023, Babymorocco’s music has greatly evolved over the past few years, and he’s only just getting started. Despite being less than three months out from his first EP, Babymorocco has already begun working on a follow-up to The Sound that is currently expected to be released sometime next year. He’s the gift that keeps on giving. Let the hype begin!
Babymorocco has captured both our hearts and ears with The Sound, which is available now across all online and streaming platforms!
